Doris Arellano

Lives and works in Oaxaca, Mexico

Doris Arellano, based in Oaxaca, depicts the traditional life in Oaxaca and the Mexican South more broadly, with vibrant colours and flowing lines. As she puts it herself, she was not given great power with words, but was given eyes that can see the magic of colour and hands to paint what her eyes can see. She uses oils both for their colour and their textural depth, creating truly unique pieces.

Doris Arellano was born in the city of Tuxtepec, a town located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.  She discovered her talent for art from a very early age, spending her childhood days drawing shapes of women with beautiful flowing dresses on school notebooks. Throughout her youth she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, but life led her to become the artist she is today. She became the only one of her siblings to follow a career focused on art. With the support of her parents, she moved to the city of Oaxaca where she entered the “Fine Arts Institute” to study drawing and painting, and formally set out on her path to become an artist.

"My state, especially my hometown: Tuxtepec and its beautiful women became one of my greatest inspirations over time," says Doris. "I like to create, I am inspired by what surrounds me, I don't know how to describe my creative process, it is as if the colour came from some point in my soul, a part of my essence and the only thing I do is capture it in the canvas in front of me."

Her work has led her to travel through Mexico and beyond, including individual and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe. She works with various media, ranging from oils to graphics. She always works within her two favourite artistic styles: the traditional and the contemporary surrealist.
With the traditional style, she represents the great love she feels towards her home state of Oaxaca. With the contemporary style we can see a different side of Doris: full of passion and sensuality, capturing on canvas the emotions that come from the depths of her being, revealing her true soul.
